I’m Thankful… For Non-Meme Posts

I’m technically anti-meme because I, well, hate them.  It seems like you’re not allowed to blog if you hate meme’s, but I do.  In fact, in a moment of honest confession, I will share that I don’t even read meme’s if you do them.  I see “Meme” and my eyes roll to the back of my head and an unknown force takes control of my mouse and I click over to someone else’s blog before I have time to think about what I’m doing.

I think I’m allergic to them or something.  And, usually if people tag me for a meme (and I somehow managed to see that they did it), I pretend like I didn’t see it so that I won’t hurt their feelings, which I guess is a form of lying, but it’s the nice kind, so I think it’s probably okay.

But Mak is nice.  I mean, even though she just tagged me for a meme, I still think she’s a cool blogger.  And, let’s face it. I’m a blog loser, so I feel like I probably owe something to the seven people who are still reading this blog even though I said I was going to quit blogging this last February.  Since Mak is apparently one of the loyal few, I figured I’d better participate in the meme that John started, who is also a blogger worth reading, even though he not only does meme’s, but also starts them.  I’m a big person.  So I can forgive people for their faults.  Even if the fault is as brutal as meme-ing.

5 Things I’m Thankful For Meme:

1. Write down five things that you’re thankful for.
2. Tag five friends who you’d like to see participate in this meme.
3. (Optional) Include a link to this post and encourage others to place a link to their completed meme in the comments section of this post so we can keep track of the thankfulness running around the blogosphere.

I, Molly, am thankful for:

 1. Groups like World Vision, Voice of the Martyrs, Samaritan’s Purse, and other organizations that I love to support with our meager spare funds.  What a cool resource they provide for us.   I’m really really thankful for people who have the guts and the get-go to get groups like that off the ground and running.  Thanks, whoever and wherever you are.

2. Tea.  I really like a variety of herbal teas.  Even though I like coffee better.  But I am not drinking coffee, since it’s not good for my weird health problem right now, even though there’s nothing better than waking up to a hot steaming cup of coffee with just a touch of cream.  But, well, tea will do.  So I’m thankful for tea.  If I just don’t think about coffee, tea tastes a lot better.  I drink tea from the moment I wake up to the second before I brush my teeth at night.  Oral fixation or something, I don’t know.

3.  My coat.  My best friend pretty much shamed me into getting it by telling me that it was flat-out embarrasing to be seen with me in public with my over-sized army-colored coat that I stole from my husband.  My line of thinking: “I’m a mom!  I don’t buy cool coats for myself, I buy coats for my kids!  Don’t you know how expensive coats are these days?”

What is it about becoming a mom?  I feel guilty even thinking that I should look fashionable.  A business owner complimented me once about my terrible sense of fashionlessness, saying how she thought I was the coolest pastor’s wife she’d ever met because I never looked like I had it all together.  I, uh, thanked her for her warm words of encouragement and walked away feeling like a total frump.  But did that change me?  No, not at all.

Jeans, short-sleeved shirts and Birkenstocks make up my wardrobe, the end.  So, there we were in Old Navy (getting clothes for the kids, of course!) and we walked by the coat section and I was encouraging my friend to splurge on a coat that looked really cute on her.  Which is when she dropped her pretense (of being a sweet gentle friend) and let me have it, like, NON-STOP (so that you knew she wasn’t just saying it but she actually really meant it) and I realized she was probably telling the truth.  Since she has fashion sense and somehow manages to look really cute all the time, I figured I’d better trust her.  So I coughed up 80 smackers then and there (at least it was on sale) and walked out with a new coat and my husband’s green bohemoth stuffed unceremoniously in the store bag.

It’s been a couple weeks now and the funny thing is, I love it!  It is really weird how nice it is to look somewhat put together.  I mean, it makes you feel…good.  It’s just a dumb coat, but I feel like a real live person in it, not just a frazzled shepherd of many tripping feet.  Gee, this newfound realization could get expensive…

4. My husband.  He’s better than a coat, even though his coat doesn’t look good on me.  It’s probably because his manly chest is five times bigger than  mine.  Sad, but a painful truth I’ve come to accept.  But that’s not why I put him on the list.  Mainly, I just like him.  Plus, what with my newfound realization and all (see #3), I’ve got to butter him up before the bills start rolling in…

5.  And last but not least, I’m thankful that tomorrow there will be a feast at my grandmother’s house, and that despite all the pain and damage a fallen world and it’s fallen race has wrought on all of our lives, my family being no small exception, there will still be a huge triple-expanded table filled with faces all sitting around a banquet spread fit for kings, and through that we can have one little momentary glimpse, peeking out of our fairy-tale and into the Real Story,  at all of us from across the ages sitting together at the Banquet of the Lamb.

And with that, I now tag…hmmm, I’m not even sure who reads this thing anymore, so let me pick the ones I know are here due to their unfortunate distinction of having commented (muhahahahaha!):

Renee, Nathan, Maureen, Leah, and Tulip Girl

You can run, but you can’t hide!!!!

  1. Thanks. And thanks for not tagging me, because I also hate being tagged. Well, that could be one of my answers to the meme. But now that you know I am still reading this, I suppose I have left myself open to being tagged in future …

  2. PS Enjoy the feast, and have a good holiday!

  3. I’m still reading…maybe there are 8 of us :)

I don’t usually do memes either although sometimes I do, if I’m tagged, for the same reason as you (I think) – i.e. I like the person who tagged me and relationships are more important to me than taking a rigid stand on principle because I don’t especially like something.

I like coffee but stopped drinking it because of a health problem I’ve been having lately :(

    Happy Thanksgiving!

  4. ROFLOL… I actually don’t really like meme’s either but I do them about 40% of the time and then make others annoyed with me and feel very proud of myself ;)

  5. Hi Molly,

Thanks for leaving a kind message on my blog – I’m glad you found my journey interesting!

All the best as you explore the Orthodox Church – it certainly is a ‘paradigm’ of Christian thought the like of which I had NEVER experienced before.

    Take care,

    Richard

  6. PETER, peter, peter… I’ll put you down on my list for the NEXT time I have to do one of these. Thanks for the reminder.

Helen! Yah! Nice to hear your voice (well, in a round about cyber sort of way)! I’m going straight over to both of your blogs right now to catch up. :)

Mak, now that you’ve admitted the TRUTH about your Meme feelings…

Richard, Thanks. I’m thinking (thinking) about visiting one nearby, but…I’m actually scared to do it. LOL. It sounds so foreign to everything I’ve experienced and for some reason makes me really nervous… I’m feeling like a big wimp!

  7. Molly, thanks for dropping by CatE today!

  8. Welcome back (I’m still catching up with my blog reading), and happy Thanksgiving!

  9. Helen,
My pleasure, as always. I love reading your thoughtful commentaries.

Kievas, the SMURFS? That was great!

  10. That’s just mean.

    Truly. Mean.

  11. I don’t mind memes as long as I don’t have to put a button or special looking thing on my blog… I will never get nominated for anything again, since I have never figured out how to put the thingy up on my blog – I must look ungrateful or aloof… :)

Happy Thanksgiving… see you next week.

  12. k. i did it.

    for U.

  13. THANKS! :)

  14. ah the joys of a new coat, you were previously obviosly lamb dressed as mutton :)

  15. Okay, I just looked at the link for the coat and it’s NOT the coat I bought…I’m not sure how I managed to put the wrong link in but…
Oh well, I’m too lazy to go fix it! lol..
