What’s on your player?
I will admit to thinking my ipod nano (I bought a refurbished one for Christmas) was probably going to be in the same catagory as my juicer: expensive toy that sees little use. But, unlike the juicer, which is packed in it’s original box and hasn’t been thought of anytime in the last 6 months, my nano is used almost daily. I love popping it in when I’m doing something mindless that I don’t want to be doing. Makes for a great kitchen cleaning companion among other things.
My favorite listens include Democracy Now for news (Love it. Plus, anyone who plays readings from Howard Zinn’s excellent “People’s History of the United States,” book, here for free, for the 4th of July gets major bonus points). Bill Moyer’s podcast is another favorite. This would probably also be a good time to admit that I’m not a right-wing conservative.
I really enjoy This American Life for the obvious reasons: it’s truly fascinating, all in a very “normal” way. I enjoy having the Newsweek and 60 Minutes podcasts as well. I don’t have television, so they provide good fodder for nights when I can’t fall asleep or need “news lite.” Godward musings include Steve Brown Etc, and The God Journey, two completely different views on the spiritual life in many ways, and yet in other ways not. For whatever reason, they both resonate with me somewhere and pull me in. The God Journey just because they think out of the box, and Steve Brown because he’s the right wing conservative that I’m not, and yet exemplifies graciousness, thoughtfulness, and adds in a great sense of humor.
I’m subscribed to many more podcasts, but those are some of the ones I enjoy the most. I know that most people use their players mainly for listening to music, but I will admit that I almost never do. I think it’s because I have hardly any good music. When I trashed all my “secular” music collection at 19 (which I now completely regret), I never did find much in “Christian” music that I liked. I mean, how do you find a replacement for the Violent Femmes, the Pixies, and their ilk? You listen to a lot of classical guitar music, that’s how. So other than U2’s latest album, a few Lost Dog’s songs and a pile of Classical Surrounding cd’s, I don’t have much that I truly enjoy.
I’d like to rebuild a good music collection, but it’s expensive for one thing, and for another thing almost too painful to consider. I like music so much that I’d rather not really listen to it than only be able to enjoy it half-way (half-way meaning that I deeply love music but I’m not at a place in life where I can fully engage with it). So music is a part of me that’s usually put away, and I’m sure a psycho-analyst would like to explore the reasons for that, but I’m too busy with the chaos of my life to think about it just yet. Plus, I have a puppy—a puppy who woke me up way too early this morning.

I buy $15 iTunes gift cards when I can at the grocery store, etc and then download music as I go. That way I don’t get on a roll and download a bunch and my debit card go into shock. It has taken about 2 years to get my “collection” which is everything from Ziggy Marley to Passion tour songs and everything in between.
Podcasts? I have so many I love. Some are the same as you mentioned above, but I love PODRUNNER to exercise to. It is a mix of beats/dj music for working out and works really well when I need to jam out while cleaning the house to a fast beat.
I also love a few meditation podcasts but I know how popular those are with the Christian crowd.

I am a mom of three under 4. We live 20 miles from town. So sometimes when I am in the car for a half hour, one way, and can’t stand “I’m a Little Teapot” and the Noah’s Arky Arky song anymore, I listen to my Ipod while I drive. I just keep saying “I can’t hear you! Just listen to your CD!” to the backseat people.

normalmiddle – I’d love to hear more on the meditation podcasts.
I have a Creative Zen–I’m very happy with the player, plus, I can download free audio from our ListenAlaska site which doesn’t support iPod. I have Freakonomics on hold with them right now.
I also listen to 99% audio. What’s on my player at the moment: Several lectures by Dr. Neufeld, a specialist in attachment theory; Season 2 of This American Life along with some recent episodes I haven’t listened to yet; People’s History of the United States (this is read by an automated recorder for the blind–I’ve never listened to one of those before–it takes a little extra focus); Jesus Has Left the Building–listened to two chapters, might listen to the rest?; Getting Things Done by David Allen; The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran, performed by Richard Harris–the best!; Dubliners by James Joyce; The Bible Experience, New Testament; and Hush, Yo-Yo Ma;

Meditation Oasis is a really good one. And you know what? While the music plays I sit and listen and focus (and sometimes fall asleep I admit)….and oft times think of Jesus and God and I really do find it to be a CHRISTIAN experience.
I like Meditation Oasis b/c she talks you thru it, and it is a good thing for a beginner or someone scared of meditation as some sort of culty-new-agey-you’ll-become-a-witch type thing.

Oooh, good ideas, guys. It’s good to hear what others are listening. I had a feeling I’d get some good tips and thoughts.

Don Carson are JI Packer are frequently on my listening list for thinking stuff.
As far as music goes, I haven’t encountered anyone who comes close to the wonderful passion, simplicity and joy of Keith Green. His songs are sermons. Check out some of his stuff below:

Oh, I can soooo relate to that!
And. . . be jealous. . . yes, I’ve been a backstage guest at a Lost Dogs concert. . . and went to Russian language school with Steve Hindalong’s parents. Oh, the coolness that is me. *eg*

I’m a late bloomer, as I just discovered Bob Dylan a few months ago, even though I literally (timewise) grew up with him. I’ve now got a small collection of his CDs. It must have been a simple twist of fate, but I don’t think twice about it, ’cause it’s all right.

Last year a colleague told me about LimeWire. I download music like crazy. I’ve also loaded what CDs I have handy.
I download Issues, Etc, The Lutheran Hour, Woman to Woman podcasts to listen to. I also downloaded something referred to on White Washed Feminists recently that I’m looking forward to listening to.
I plan to do some serious searching around on the iTunes store soon. I didn’t realize so much on there was free.

Based on the list of podcasts you mentioned that you are currently enjoying, I think you would really like to listen to the free podcasts put out by The Economist. There is a weekly (at least I think its weekly) one called “Democracy in America” that is absolutely fantastic! (Available for free from iTunes)
